Anini Beach is considered one of the top beaches on Kauai not only for its natural beauty, but also for its accessible water. You’ll find very little development along Anini Beach, allowing it to retain a natural feel. Anini Beach’s claim to fame is that it holds the longest and widest reef system in the Hawaiian Islands, making it a great place to explore the underwater world.
For your day at Anini Beach, be sure to bring along a mask, snorkel, and fins to explore the expansive reef system and the wide variety of tropical fish found living there. Snorkel sets can be rented from nearby surf shops or purchased inexpensively at box stores such as Walmart or Costco. The sandy shoreline makes entry into the water easy, even for beginning snorkelers. The sand eventually gives way to reef, where you can begin your snorkeling adventure. Beginning snorkelers can stay in the shallower water, where there is still plenty to see beneath the surface. If you venture further from shore, swimmers and snorkelers need to be aware of the strong current, especially as you reach the outer edge of the reef. Water conditions are especially calm during summer months. During winter months, a larger swell can make this an unsafe location for swimming and snorkeling, so always be aware of the current conditions before venturing out. There is no lifeguard at Anini Beach.
In addition to the potential for an unforgettable snorkeling experience, Anini Beach is also a great locale for swimming and picnicking. The calm waters and sandy bottom near the shore make for great swimming conditions, especially for families with children.
