Embracing the Island Life
Situated along the island’s east coast, Plantation Hale Suites offers a well-positioned location to base your stay. The Hawaiian word “hale” means house, and you will feel immediately at home in these welcoming accommodations. Kauai has a long history of sugar plantations as a major industry before the boom of tourism. Though sugar cane is no longer produced in large scale on island, vast plantation lands and a peaceful rural vibe still remain. When vacationing on Kauai, accept the invitation to slow down, leave behind the hectic schedule of everyday life, and embrace simple daily pleasures. If you are interested in getting a glimpse into life during the plantation days, consider taking a ride on the Kauai Plantation Railway at Kilohana. This train ride will take you throughout the grounds of a 105-acre historic plantation, past original crops such as taro and sugar cane, as well as a wide variety of other tropical fruit trees and crops. The kids will love feeding the resident pigs, goats, sheep, and donkey! The Plantation Railway is conveniently located in the east coast town of Lihue.
Thanks to its many groves of coconut trees which add to the tropical vibe of the island’s east side, this area has been dubbed the Coconut Coast. From the crystal-clear waters of the ocean to the proximity to Wailua River, the only navigable river in the state, you’ll have many options for enjoying water activities near Plantation Hale. Hit the beach not only for the amazing views, but also to enjoy activities such as snorkeling, swimming, stand up paddle boarding, surfing, and boogie boarding. Numerous beaches along the east coast will allow you to experience a variety of venues for getting active in the water. Kealia Beach offers waves great for boogie boarding and for intermediate surfing. The waves tend to be smaller along the north end of the beach near the rocky outcropping. Kalapaki Beach is also a good beach for boogie boarding, swimming, and beginning to intermediate surfing. A rental kiosk right on the beach front makes picking up gear and booking lessons simple and convenient at this east coast beach. Lydgate Beach Park is another family friendly beach great for swimming in a rocked-in area that is protected from the waves. Bring along your mask and snorkel to swim alongside plentiful tropical fish at Lydgate! There is also a large recently updated playground here the kids will love.
Kayaking up the Wailua River can also be a fantastic way to explore the island’s lush interior. And if you want to enjoy the sights of the river without the exertion of paddling, check out the river tours offered by Smith’s. They also put on a top-notch luau on their beautifully manicured riverside grounds. Located near the river are two of Kauai’s beautiful and easy to access waterfalls, Wailua Falls and Opaeka’a Falls. The size of Wailua Falls is especially impressive, and spectacular views are available from the lookout platform that stands just beside the peak of the cascade.
In addition to shopping and dining, the nearby open-air shopping mall Coconut Marketplace also offers an events calendar with options such as cultural classes, hula shows, and a farmer’s market featuring local produce and artisan products.
There are so many options for enjoying every moment of your island vacation along the Coconut Coast! Traveling with a large group? Our Royal Coconut Coast group rentals offer space and a stunning location for an unforgettable trip.
