Beaches
With a quick vacation to Kauai, there’s just enough time to hit all the well-known sites, such as Hanalei Bay, the beaches of Poipu, and the dramatic Wailua Falls. But with a longer stay, you’ll have the luxury of venturing off the main tourist path to some of the island’s other treasured locations. Delve a little deeper into the beauty of Kauai by getting off the beaten path during your island vacation!
While you’ll find many visitors trying their hand at surfing along beaches such as Hanalei and Kiahuna Beach, lesser-known gems along the island’s east coast can be a great way to try a new watersport without the crowds. Kalapaki Beach is one of the most convenient options for beginners, with a rental gear shop right onsite so there’s no need to transport bulky boards on your rental car. Whether you prefer to book a lesson with an instructor or rent a board to try it on your own, both are easily doable from Kalapaki Beach.
Kealia Beach is an east coast favorite. This beach offers silky white sand curled up against crystal clear aqua blue waters and is a good destination for intermediate surfers. Along the far northern end of the beach near the rocky outcropping, the waves tend to be smaller, making this a great spot for families who want to enjoy a refreshing swim or an afternoon of boogie boarding.
Hiking & Biking
With more time to take the days slowly, be sure to take advantage of the Kauai Coastal Path, which runs for miles along the island’s east coast. The beach path, also known as Ke Ala Hele Makalae, passes several white sand beaches, rocky cliffs, and tidepools, with nothing separating you from the fantastic scenery. Bike rental shops located convenient to the path mean you don’t have to worry about transporting them on your rental car. Simply pick out your favorite beach cruiser and soak in the scenery for miles!
More time on the island means more time for day trips to other scenic areas. Consider heading to the west side of the island where Koke’e State Park can be accessed. Taking the road up the mountain from the west side town of Waimea, you’ll pass numerous lookout stops along the way. From these lookouts, spectacular views over Waimea Canyon reveal why this phenomenon is nicknamed the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Be sure to spend some time admiring Waipo’o Falls, a breathtaking waterfall that cascades into the canyon. Though the view is from afar, it offers a good perspective on the scale of these natural wonders. Further into Koke’e, be sure to stop at the Kalalau Lookout, where you’ll take in the emerald-green sea cliffs that the Na Pali Coast is so well known for. While Koke’e itself is not off the beaten path, many visitors stick to the lookouts and simply take in the scenery from afar. To truly immerse yourself in the area’s natural beauty, consider packing your hiking shoes and setting aside time to explore one of the many trails located here. The Awa’awa’puhi Trail is a favorite for views of the Na Pali Coast, while the Canyon Trail offers spectacular views over Waimea Canyon. Whichever trail you choose, be prepared with plenty of water and stay on the marked path, as the steep cliffs should not be underestimated.
An east coast hike treasured by residents is the Nounou Trail, more commonly known as Sleeping Giant. When viewed from afar, it’s possible to imagine the Hawaiian legend which gave this mountain its nickname. The trails that ascend this mountain meander through a pine tree forest before eventually opening up to sweeping views over the coastline and surrounding mountains. Bring a picnic to be enjoyed at the top! This family friendly trail is perfect for when you’re ready for a break from the beach.
Local Eats
Forgo the chain restaurants and hotel eateries geared toward tourists that you’ll find sprinkled across the island and instead take time to seek out some of the local favorites for dining. The east coast offers the most options for dining, and you’ll find everything here from fresh seafood and local Hawaiian fare to worldwide cuisine. Grab fresh juice in the morning from Kauai Juice Co or a hearty breakfast at Kountry Kitchen, where you’ll find local favorites such as the loco moco and banana macadamia pancakes. Pono Market is the perfect place to try local dishes to go, bringing it down to the beach for a meal with a view!
