Positioned along the northern coast of the island is a picturesque inlet known as Hanalei Bay. A beautiful crescent-shaped beach lines the bay, stretching for over a mile in length. With a gorgeous beachfront, plentiful water activities, and a charming surf town just a block away, Hanalei Bay is a favorite place to spend the day for residents and visitors alike. Be sure to make your way to Kauai’s northern coast during your stay for some fun in the sun at Hanalei Bay.
Activities at Hanalei Bay
Even if you simply visit Hanalei Bay for the views, it’s well worth the drive. The western end of the beach is backed by sheer mountains, creating a dramatic backdrop. If there has been heavy rain recently, waterfalls can often be spotted making their way down the sides of the mountains. Along the eastern end of the beach is Hanalei Pier, photogenically stretching out into the water. This is a great spot to admire the views or to add as a stopping point on your beach walk. You’ll often catch local kids here jumping from the pier into the clear waters below or surfing on the gentle waves that break alongside the pier.
Several parking areas create multiple entry points for enjoying a beach day at Hanalei Bay, from the eastern end known as Black Pot Beach to the western end known as Pine Trees. The beaches along the center and western ends of the bay are lifeguarded, while there is no lifeguard along the eastern end. During summer months, the waters throughout Hanalei Bay are clear and calm, offering pristine swimming conditions, especially for families with children. During winter months, calm waters can usually still be enjoyed near Hanalei Pier. Generally speaking, in all seasons the further west you move along the bay, the larger the waves.
Hanalei Bay is a great starting point for those who want to learn how to surf. With a sandy bottom and no reef with which to contend, this is widely considered the safest place for beginners. Lessons can easily be booked at one of the surf shops located in Hanalei Town. Experienced surfers can paddle out to an offshore break just outside the bay.
Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head to one of the many restaurants in Hanalei, where you’ll find everything from food trucks to upscale cuisine. This is also a great place to browse surf shops for swimwear and casual wear!
