Kauai’s dramatic landscapes make it a great destination for outdoor lovers. In fact, the vast majority of the island consists of undeveloped land, from unscathed white sand beaches to untouched pristine tropical forests. From hitting the beach to hiking a lone trail, exploring both Kauai’s coastline and its lush interior will prove to be rewarding. Given the nickname The Garden Island, the vibrant plant life here means that nearly everywhere you go, the backdrop is stunning.
The dramatic Wailua Falls, situated on the east side of the island, is one of the best waterfalls on Kauai. Adding to this top destination is its accessibility. While many of Kauai’s waterfalls require a grueling hike to reach, Wailua Falls can be easily seen from a viewing area that places you right near the top of the falls. This waterfall usually drops in a twin cascade, descending dramatically into a pool below, though this can depend on recent rainfall. A special phenomenon seen here is that a rainbow can often be spotted at the base of the falls, which means from the viewing area, the rainbow is enjoyed from above. If you’re staying on the island’s beautiful Coconut Coast, or east side, consider getting the lay of the land from a birds’ eye view. The Sleeping giant Trail, also known as the Nounou Trail, offers panoramic views from its peak. Make your way through a pine forest that you may not expect to find on a tropical island as you ascend the mountain. At the top, views open up to the Wailua River emptying into the ocean, as well as over the vast east coast.
The Kauai Beach Path is another favorite way to get out and enjoy the day on the east side. Rent beach cruisers from one of the bike shops in Kapa’a that are conveniently located near the path before cruising for miles on this paved path that runs right along the ocean. Pause to swim at white sand beaches and keep an eye out for whale spouts off the coast (in season). Kauai is a great way to take in scenic views of Kauai’s serene coastline.

Even if you plan to spend plenty of time soaking up the sun at Kauai’s best beaches, you won’t regret setting aside at least a couple days for adventuring. Aside from DIY adventures that can be planned along Kauai’s top hiking trails, consider booking a unique adventure through one of the island’s outfitters.
Helicopter tours are a popular way to explore the island from another vantage point. On an island where 97% of the land is undeveloped, many of Kauai’s most spectacular wonders can only be seen from above. That makes a helicopter tour on Kauai particularly rewarding. The deep valleys of Waimea Canyon, the dramatic cliffs of the Na Pali Coast, and countless waterfalls tucked away in lush jungle areas are just a few of the top sights to be enjoyed from the thrilling vantage point of a helicopter.
There are even more ways to fly above the landscape besides in a helicopter! Kauai offers several ziplining opportunities which transport daring passengers at top speeds over a lush landscape, with dramatic mountain and ocean views in the distance.
And of course, adventures don’t end with the land and air. The sea offers even more options, with a wide variety of boat excursions that will get you out into Hawaii’s waters. From thrilling Zodiac rides to luxurious sunset sails, you can cater your marine adventure to your preferences. Most of the boat excursions on Kauai offer more than just sightseeing opportunities. Extras such as offshore snorkeling, dolphin and whale watching, sunset cruises, and upscale onboard meals all offer different ways to treat yourself to an adventure on the water.
