Chase Big Ocean Energy at Polihale State Park
The first of the best Kauai surf spots can be found at Polihale State Park on the west side of Kauai. Uncrowded and offering what is known as a true surf break (an obstruction in the ocean), the energy of the ocean is powerful. Constantly shifting sandbars keep the ride unpredictable, and although it is not recommended for beginning surfers, intermediate and expert surfers will feel right at home. The long, bumpy, unpaved road to reach this spot keeps crowds away, giving the area a remote appeal.
Build Surf Confidence at Kalapaki Beach in Lihue
Beginners just may find that the swells at Kalapaki Beach make it one of the best places to surf in Kauai. The area is protected by breakwaters, creating gentle waves that make this a safe spot for beginners to build confidence. Intermediate surfers also do well at Kalapaki Beach, and the more dangerous Ammonias break attracts expert surfers.
If you’re traveling with a surfer, but aren’t interested in the sport, the family vibe at the beach will keep you happy while your traveling companion finds their joy on the waves. This wonderful surf spot can be found on the southeast side of Kauai, just south of our Kauai cottages on the beach.
Find Your Wave at Hanalei Bay’s Famous North Shore
Our next surf spot on Kauai, Hanalei Bay, is a world-famous surf spot. Located on our island’s most famous North Shore, its size and layout naturally create a variety of zones, offering a spot for surfers of all experience levels to practice their obsession. Hanalei Pier (on the east side) offers a lifeguard beach, gentle swells, and the best spot for beginners, while the Point is strictly for experts, and the Bowl and PineTrees are perfect for intermediate and experts.
Test Your Skills at Kealia Beach’s East Shore Breaks
Kealia Beach’s East Shore breaks are a spot where both traditional and longboards work well. A longboard differs in size, shape, and the way they are ridden. Featuring a round nose, they can be anywhere between 8 and 11 feet in length. The ride style is more relaxed, like riding a beach cruiser, rather than a street bike, and offers a great way for beginners to pick up the sport. The traditional surfboard will be shorter (generally under 7 feet), skinnier, and thinner. A traditional surfboard may be what beginners strive to work up to, but in both cases, Kealia Beach will be a great surf spot.
Learn the Rhythm of the Ocean at Anini Beach
Ideal for intermediate surfers and longboarders, surfers at Anini Beach can expect to find consistent wave lengths, fantastic wind conditions, and far fewer crowds. This wonderful beach does feature a coral reef bottom that is quite shallow, though, and it is recommended to surf only at high tide to reduce the risk of injury. Anini Beach is in the famed North Shore area but isn’t as crowded as other surf spots, so there will be less competition for the big swells.
