Wailua Falls on Kauai Island

HomeThings to Do on KauaiOutdoors & NatureWailua Falls on Kauai Island

Known as the Garden Isle, it’s no surprise that Kauai is home to dramatic waterfalls and lush foliage. For those who can tear themselves away from the postcard perfect beaches, a world of beauty awaits even on the island’s interior. Kauai’s waterfalls range from gentle cascades to dramatic freefalls, and they also vary in difficulty as to how much effort you’ll need to put in to admire them. While some can only be accessed by traversing miles on a challenging trail or even from above on a helicopter tour, others can be seen from the relative ease of a lookout point. Wailua Falls is in the latter category, making it a great sightseeing point to add to your list!

Must-See Waterfalls on Kauai

Because Wailua Falls is so easily accessible, yet also so beautiful, it’s definitely one that should be added to your Kauai itinerary. If it looks familiar, it may be because this cascade was featured on the opening credits of the television show Fantasy Island. This 80-foot waterfall cascades in two twin streams before plunging off the cliff into a deep pool below. When rain in the mountains has been heavy, it can appear as one raging waterfall. At times, sunlight streaming through the mist creates a rainbow at the base of the falls, creating the unique experience of looking down at a rainbow from the viewpoint above.

There’s no hiking required to reach the lookout for Wailua Falls. The only effort required will be to find a parking spot in the small parking lot, which may require some patience. Once you’ve secured a spot, the railed-off viewpoint allows you to admire the falls from a close vantage point, affording great photo opportunities.

Planning Your Outing to Wailua Falls

Wailua Falls is located on the island’s east side and can be accessed from the town of Lihue. From Kuhio Highway, head northwest on Maalo Road, also known as Highway 583. It takes approximately ten minutes driving on Highway 583 before the road dead ends into the waterfall’s parking area, so you can’t miss it. After enjoying the falls, you’ll find plenty of dining options for refueling in Lihue!
