With plenty of time to enjoy the island of Kauai, you can not only hit Kauai’s top sights, but also spend some time discovering the hidden gems scattered throughout the island. From outdoor activities such as hitting the beach, hiking, and boating, to more subdued excursions such as shopping and dining, you’ll find there are many thrilling things to do on Kauai Island.
Things to Do on Kauai
As a tropical island, it’s no surprise that Kauai is known for its top beaches. Whether you prefer a bustling waterfront filled with action or a secluded shoreline with no development or human in sight, Kauai more than delivers when it comes to beach options. Staying on the island’s east side of the island will not only provide easy access to the many beautiful beaches along the Coconut Coast, but also make a day trip to the renowned beaches on the north and south coasts possible as well. Along Kauai’s north shore, discover the beauty of Hanalei Bay. This large crescent-shaped beach offers a great venue for families to enjoy a beach day. Along the east end of the beach, you’ll find a picturesque fishing pier as well as calm swimming waters. As you move west along the beach, the waves tend to get larger, especially during winter months. With its sandy ocean bottom and gently breaking waves, Hanalei is an ideal spot for those who’d like to try their hand at surfing.
The South Shore Along Kauai Island
The south shore’s Poipu Beach Park is another family favorite, with calm waters perfect for families with children. The near-shore reef also makes Poipu Beach a popular spot for snorkeling, so be sure to bring along a mask, snorkel, and fins, or rent them from one of the nearby surf shops. Kauai’s beaches offer opportunities for not only lounging along a scenic shoreline, but also participating in a wide variety of water activities such as surfing, swimming, boogie boarding, and stand-up paddle boarding, among others! One thing for sure is that no matter where you are on Kauai, you’re never far from an amazing beach!
If you can tear yourself away from the beach, more beauty and adventures await. Outdoor enthusiasts should be sure to spend some time exploring Waimea Canyon State Park and Koke’e State Park, where stunning views and a myriad of hiking trails abound. Other adventures such as ziplining, horseback riding, tubing, and helicopter tours all offer additional opportunities to add excitement to your Kauai itinerary!
