How can one of the most beautiful places in the world get even better? By giving you easy access to viewing whales and dolphins, crashing waves, and green seaside cliffs. When you stay in one of Premier Kauai’s luxury rentals, you will be just steps from one of the top 10 rated recreational trails in all the US as rated by a 2021 USA Today poll.

Ke Ala Hele Makalae

While the name might be a bit difficult to say for non-native Hawaiians, Ke Ala Hele Makalae is Kauai’s most popular walking, running, and carefree biking trails. Meaning “path that goes by the coast” in Hawaiian, Ke Ala Hele Makalae is approximately 7.3 miles of pavement running from Lydgate Park to Wailua Beach Park and Kapa’a to Ahihi Point. When finished, it will total over 17 miles, providing a long trail that offers the best views of the Kauai Coconut Coast. The trail is completely wheelchair and stroller accessible, making sure no one in the family is left behind for an adventure down this beautiful trail.

What to Expect

Ke Ala Hele Makalae really takes the word “multi-use” to the next level. Whether taking a stroll, learning about the history and culture of the garden island from the interpretive signs, enjoying the whales when they are visiting, quietly viewing the monk seals resting on the beach, or delighting in the spinner dolphins dancing in the water, your visit to Kauai will be even more memorable because of this nearby attraction.

Accessing the Trail

As a guest of Premier Kauai, your access can be just a few steps away from your rental! If you are driving, Ke Ala Hele Makalae can be accessed from nearly every road that leads to the ocean, from Wailua to North Kapaa. On the southern end is Lydgate Park, where you can find plenty of parking along with public restrooms. To access the northern most part of the trail, head over to Kealea Beach Park, where there is also plenty of parking and public restrooms.

Nearby Activities

Once you have explored Ke Ala Hele Makalae from top to bottom, you may wish to find some activities in the vicinity. Fortunately, Ke Ala Hele Makalae’s perfect location allows you to access plenty of fun. Lydgate Park offers water and land activities to keep the whole family busy for the day. The park is home to two separate lagoons that offer natural barriers resulting in calmer waters. This makes it perfect to jump in the ocean water for a swim or even go snorkeling. Once you are done with the aquatic fun, head back to shore to find plenty more to do. Picnic pavilions offers plenty of space to lay out the perfect picnic with family. The spacious playground and huge community-built wooden structure offers hours of fun for your “keiki” (children). Last but certainly not least, the beach itself offers the perfect spot to lay back and soak in the Kauai sunshine.

Bike Rentals

Another great way you can take advantage of Ke Ala Hele Makalae is by grabbing a bicycle rental. Hele on Kauai Bike Rentals is nearby and offers a variety of bike rentals. Their bicycles come in top shape and ready to ride. Enjoy a basic beach cruiser or saddle up for a tandem bicycle ride. Each bike rental is offered by 2-hour, 4-hour, 24-hour, or week-long rates.
