There’s no time of year that Kauai isn’t appealing to travelers but there’s something particularly nice about heading this way over Labor Day when you can relax and celebrate time away from the daily hustle alongside family and friends. When you’re looking to elevate your Kauai Labor Day getaway in 2024, the following activities, events, and attractions are sure to help you make more of every moment.

Enjoy Amazing Weather This Time of Year

September marks the arrival of Labor Day across the U.S. and those who find themselves in Kauai for the holiday will be treated to terrific weather. September is often considered a top time of year to travel this way thanks to off-season crowd numbers being low and visitors often able to save a bit on popular excursions and outings. Daily highs across Kauai in September often linger around the mid-70s, giving travelers every reason to stay out and explore their surroundings. In the evening hours, temperatures dip into the low 60s making it a wonderful setting for an al fresco meal or a Luau experience.

Experience the Kauai Marathon and Half Marathon Event

When travel plans bring you to Kauai over Labor Day, you’ll be right on time to participate in or cheer on athletes at the annual Kauai Marathon and Half Marathon event. This year, the races will be held on September 1, giving athletes a chance to put their skills to the test the day before they can rest and relax in the name of holiday fun! The Kauai Marathon and Half Marathon are set apart from other races across the country thanks to the island’s gorgeous scenery and inviting weather that’s hard to top. Along the route, participants have the unique opportunity to run by Taiko drum troupes and hula dancers offering encouragement beyond the striking beauty of the backdrop of mountains. The races come to an end at an oceanfront finish line, rewarding athletes with breathtaking views to enjoy after so much hard work. The funding for this annual experience is provided by the Hawaii Tourism Authority through the Community Enrichment Program. Runners can sign up online in advance to secure their spot for this day of racing that will run from 6:00 am until 3:00 pm. The starting point is located at 2360 Kiahuna Plantation Drive in Koloa.

Take Part in the Hawaii Line Dance Festival

Labor Day travelers heading to Kauai who can’t wait to celebrate in island style will want to stick around to participate in the Hawaii Line Dance Festival that will be hosted in Lihue from September 13 through September 14 this year. This highly anticipated event is loved by locals and visitors alike and is open to dancers and non-dancers excited to be a part of two days of line dancing fun and entertainment! Instructors from across Hawaii and the rest of the country flock to Kauai this time of year to take part in the event which also works as an important fundraiser for the Kauai Veterans Center and Museum. Each day of the Line Dance Festival runs from 5:00 pm until 10:00 pm at 3215 Kapule Highway, and participants can count on enjoying everything from open dancing sessions and workshops to incredible performances, fantastic food, and a fun-for-everyone environment.

There are two major dance events built into the pre-festival lineup as well, including a social dance night at Kauai Bowl on the Wednesday before the event, and a set-up party with dancing happening on Thursday. The Hawaii Line Dance Craft Fair is also a part of the overall festival experience and a must-visit when you’re a traveler with a passion for the creative arts. The craft fair will also be held at 3215 Kapule Highway at the Kauai Veterans Center on September 14 and will be open from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm. Here, you’ll find a wide variety of local vendors on-site selling everything from locally grown produce to handcrafted goods. There are also raffle drawings to partake in and opportunities to win exciting prizes throughout the day.

Spend a Scenic and Relaxing Day at Poipu Beach Park

If you can’t imagine a Labor Day getaway in Kauai without some well-deserved time on the sand, planning to take a day to enjoy Poipu Beach Park is a must. This beautiful destination hosts an inviting stretch of shoreline where you can stroll, enjoy shelling, build sandcastles with the kids, or simply settle in and savor the moment at your own preferred pace. There’s a chance you might spot endangered Hawaiian monk seals sleeping on the sand here which are stunning and fine to observe from at least 100 feet away.
